Pico C Kickstarter

Pico C Kickstarter

Postby carrisr » Mon Apr 03, 2017 1:11 pm

I know this isn't for most people in the group, but I thought I throw this out there in case anyone (or anyone you know) might be interested. Picobrew launched their next Kickstarter campaign today. It's for a cheaper and slightly more compact version of their Pico (Now called the Pico S). For those that aren't familiar, it uses kits (designed by breweries all over the US) to brew very small batches (5L). They do have a service now that let's you order your own custom recipes for use in these machines. It's not intended for most home brewers, but it would be a good gateway for someone who wants to make beer at home but is perhaps wary of the complexity of traditional brewing. In any case, the KS campaign makes the price pretty attractive, currently at $299. The expected retail is going to be $549 when it ships later this year. It comes with the machine, brew kit, brewing vessel, and a 5L serving keg. These guys do know how to deliver a product, so I would expect their timeline (August) to be fairly close. They'll reach their funding goal by the end of the day.

Many of you know that I have a Zymatic, and we have at least one new club member who recently started with a Pico model S.

I've been intrigued by the one you have, for the automation factor. Once you have learned it, can you put in the ingredients and literally walk away for 3 hours then come back and pitch yeast?

Well in theory yes, and I frequently brew while I'm working. Things can go wrong though so I don't leave it unattended for the whole run. You also do need to chill the wort yourself as it doesn't have a chiller built in.

A new feature on the Z is a delayed start. I've not played with it yet, others have.

The serving keg looks to be a standard mini-keg, like http://www.homebrewing.org/Mini-Keg-with-Tap_p_2959.html, so not stainless. It looks like a clever redesign of the brewing keg, though.

Yes and you can add two additional sets for $100 which is great. For that price I'm really tempted. I don't need it though. A number of Z owners have Pico's too. They use the Z when they want more control and the Pico for quick and easy. Others like them for the brewery branded kits.

If anyone would like to see the Zymatic I'd be happy have you over sometime. I plan to brew a saison either Sat or Sun. If you want to see it "in action" along with the rest of my brewing gear.

They have added an additional level for the kickstarter, and if they hit 1 million, they throw in a picokpack for anyone that bout a machine

I bought my Z through the Pico S campaign. They sold a limited number of refurbished machines for $700 off. Not sure if they'll do anything like that this time or not. Last time you just had to keep checking because they'd throw something out and they'd be gone in a day or so.

Picobrew put 50 refurbed Zymatic units up on the Pico C Kickstarter. At the time of this post there were 27 left. $1299 plus $80 shipping. That's $80 less than I paid for mine. You don't have to get a C to take advantage of this. I received mine around 2 months after the campaign ended, but they had more units to ship that time.

Ok, now they added a "Pico Still" upgrade for all models. They say it was designed for making hop oils. Sounds just crazy enough that my curiosity is getting the better of me. You can also make other things depending on certain laws.
